INFORMATION ABOUT MoMi FOR YOUR SPECIFIC SITUATION |
The MoMi legislation does not apply to you
The MoMi legislation only applies to non-EU/EEA students
- who are holding a Dutch residence permit for the purpose of 'study', and
- who are not registered as an exchange / visiting student
You may therefore ignore all information about the MoMi legislation.
Please note: in case you are not an exchange student and you are holding a different type of residence permit than for the purpose of 'study', please send a scan of the front and back of your permit to isd@rug.nl, if you haven't done so already.

A. What is your MoMi ECTS-requirement? (pre)
The Dutch MoMi legislation demands that you need to obtain all ECTS (100%) of your pre-programme / pre-master programme / foundation year within 12 months, in order to keep your residence permit in the next academic year and to be able to continue with your associated degree programme.

A. What is your MoMi ECTS-requirement?
Regarding your study progress, you are dealing with two types of legislation/regulation:
1. The Dutch MoMi legislation demands that you obtain at least 50% of the statutory number of ECTS per academic year in order to keep your residence permit for the next study year. Starting in September means that you need to obtain at least 50% of 60 ECTS = 30 ECTS in the current academic year, in order to keep your residence permit for the next academic year.
2. The UG regulation about the Binding Study Advice (BSA), for which a different ECTS-requirement applies, to be allowed to continue in the second year of the same study programme.
Please note: This webtool only informs you about the MoMi ECTS-requirement. Fulfilling the MoMi ECTS-requirement does not automatically mean that you also fulfill the BSA ECTS-requirement, and vice versa. Also, being exempted for the BSA ECTS-requirement does not mean that you are exempted for the MoMi ECTS-requirement. Please visit this website for more information about the BSA regulation, or contact your study/academic advisor if you have questions about this topic.

A. What is your MoMi ECTS-requirement?
Because you are studying in your final year, the MoMi legislation demands that:
-
In case you need to pass 30 – 60 ECTS in your final year to graduate, you need to obtain at least 30 ECTS in this academic year, in order to keep your residence permit for the next academic year.
- In case you need to pass less than 30 ECTS in your final year to graduate, you need to obtain all remaining credits in this academic year, in order to keep your residence permit for the next academic year.
For example: suppose that at the start of this academic year, you only need to pass 45 ECTS to graduate. This means that you will need to obtain at least 30 ECTS in this academic year to keep your residence permit. In the academic year thereafter you then need to obtain the remaining 15 ECTS.

-
In case you need to pass 15-30 ECTS in your final year to graduate, you need to obtain at least 15 ECTS in this academic year, in order to keep your residence permit for the next academic year.
- In case you need to pass less than 15 ECTS in your final year to graduate, you need to obtain all remaining credits in this academic year, in order to keep your residence permit for the next academic year.
For example: suppose that at the start of your registration in February of this academic year, you only need to pass 25 ECTS to graduate. This means that you will need to obtain at least 15 ECTS in this academic year to keep your residence permit. In the academic year thereafter you then need to obtain the remaining 10 ECTS.

B. What do you need to do if you expect to obtain insufficient study progress?
- Carefully read our information about possibilities for an exemption to the ECTS-requirement.
- If you believe that you might qualify for an exemption due to excusable reasons, and if you haven't done so before in this academic year: please continue filling in Part 2 of this webtool by using the button below (possible as of 1 March). Do not wait for (the results of) re-sits.
Please note that you may always confidentially contact your study/academic advisor if you would like to discuss your study progress and possible struggles, and together look for any possible means of support.

- If you are working on an internship, thesis or (research) project that will not be finished before the end of the academic year, and that is worth at least 15 ECTS, you can apply for virtual credits. If you are in this situation, please read the information about registration of virtual credits and continue filling in Part 3 of this webtool by using the button below (possible as of 1 June).

|
Please note: If you would qualify for an exemption based on excusable reasons, this does not automatically mean that you are allowed to take longer than 12 months to complete your pre-master programme. An exemption only ensures that you will not lose your residence permit in the following academic year, provided that you keep an active registration for the pre-master programme in that following academic year. However, other (education) rules may apply in some programmes or faculties, that limit the maximum duration of your pre-master programme (sometimes to 6 or 12 months). These rules may result in not being able to continue your pre-master programme in the following academic year, despite having received a MoMi exemption. The study/academic advisor of your programme can inform you about this.
